William HagueThe Commonwealth of Nations: a 21st Century PartnershipWilliam Hague lambasted the Labour government for its 'neglectful ambivalence' towards the Commonwealth. He pledged that the Commonwealth - 'an extraordinary organisation' - would be used as a crucial foreign policy tool by a Conservative administration. "We must refresh our vision of what the Commonwealth offers and what it can do. The world is moving on and we must not let outdated views of the past cloud our prospects for the future." |

Alison des Forges: 1942 - 2009We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Alison des Forges. An historian and tireless human rights activist, Alison drew the world's attention to what was to become Africa's most appalling genocide in Rwanda and she dedicated her life to helping to bring justice and reconciliation to the country. We were honoured that Alison agreed to join our panel event on Rwanda. Her first-rate knowledge, ability to argue her case with conviction, and her incredible warmth as a human being all shone through. The Rwandan people have lost a true friend and the field of human rights a passionate advocate. |
